Mumbai-Pune Expressway Traffic Accident: Container Truck Collides With Multiple Vehicles, Resulting In Fatality
A tragic accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway resulted in a massive traffic jam, stretching nearly five kilometres. The incident involved a speeding container trailer truck that reportedly collided with 18 to 20 vehicles, leading to one fatality and injuries to 18 others. The crash occurred on Saturday afternoon near the Adoshi tunnel under Khopoli police station limits in Khalapur taluka, Raigad district.
Accident Details and Immediate Response
According to local reports, the container truck experienced brake failure, causing it to crash into another vehicle. This triggered a chain-reaction collision involving multiple vehicles, including luxury cars like BMW and Mercedes. Emergency teams were swiftly deployed to assist the injured and clear the wreckage from the scene.

The driver of the truck lost control due to brake failure, impacting at least 20 vehicles. A police official confirmed that 19 individuals sustained serious injuries and were admitted to a private hospital in Navi Mumbai. Unfortunately, one woman succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
Traffic Disruption and Police Actions
The pile-up caused significant disruption on one of India's busiest expressways, which typically handles 1.5 to 2 lakh vehicles daily. Traffic came to a standstill near Datta Food Mall after descending from the Lonavala-Khandala ghat section. Authorities had to divert traffic through alternative routes as they worked tirelessly to restore order.
Police took the truck driver into custody for further investigation. A medical examination revealed that he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. A case has been registered, and an ongoing probe is underway to determine further details about the incident.
Impact on Vehicles and Passengers
The collision's impact was severe, with at least three vehicles completely crushed and several others badly damaged. Many passengers suffered serious injuries due to the crash's intensity. Local officials remained on-site, managing traffic flow and assisting emergency services in their efforts.
This accident highlights safety concerns on busy expressways like Mumbai-Pune, especially during weekends when vehicle numbers surge. The authorities' quick response helped manage the situation effectively, but it serves as a reminder of the importance of vehicle maintenance and road safety measures.
The tragic event underscores the need for stringent safety protocols on highways to prevent such incidents in future. As investigations continue, authorities aim to implement measures ensuring safer travel for all commuters on this vital route between Mumbai and Pune.
