Mumbai Metro Line 3 Extends To Worli: Full Route, Key Stations, And Ticket Prices Inside

South Mumbai will finally get its much-anticipated Metro connection this March, offering a quiet, air-conditioned escape from the city's noisy and traffic-heavy roads, according to a Times Now report. With fares starting at just Rs 10 and going up to Rs 60, the new underground corridor promises to transform daily commutes for thousands of Mumbaikars.

This extension is part of Metro Line 3, which first opened in October last year between Aarey and BKC, according to a report by The Times of India. Now, the line will stretch further to Worli Naka (Acharya Atre Chowk station), creating a 22 kilometres underground route from Aarey to Worli. The new link will provide a much-needed alternative to the city's packed local trains and crowded roads.

Traffic Relief

For as little as Rs 60, commuters will soon be able to avoid notorious traffic hotspots like Lady Jamshedji Road and Dr Annie Besant Road. The route will connect key areas such as Dharavi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, and Worli, making travel quicker and more convenient.

The new line is expected to reduce road traffic congestion and offer a more comfortable daily commute. Although there are some minor connectivity issues, such as the Metro station in Dadar being about a kilometre from the main railway station, the convenience of travelling between major business areas like BKC and Worli without the stress of road traffic is a significant benefit.

Beneath The Mithi River

Building this underground route was a major engineering challenge, particularly the tunnelling beneath the Mithi River. This posed significant technical difficulties.

"We used two methods under the river-a twin tunnel by tunnel boring machines (TBM) connecting BKC to Dharavi, and a siding using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM)," explained SK Gupta, director (projects) at MMRC. "Both methods had to be executed carefully due to the soft, waterlogged ground above."

Special tunnel boring machines, designed to handle soft, water-heavy soil, were used for the 1.8 kilometres stretch between BKC and Dharavi, with 1.2 kilometres running directly under the riverbed. To prevent water leaks, engineers used hydrophilic gaskets that expand on contact with water, ensuring a watertight tunnel.

Metro Line 3 Route

Once fully operational, Mumbai Metro Line 3 will cover a 33.5 kilometres underground corridor, connecting Aarey Depot in the western suburbs to Cuffe Parade in South Mumbai. The line will have 27 stations, including major stops at SEEPZ, BKC (Bandra-Kurla Complex), Dharavi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, Worli Naka (Acharya Atre Chowk), Mumbai Central, CSMT (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus), and Churchgate. This new line will provide direct connectivity between residential areas, commercial centres, and business districts, drastically reducing travel time and easing congestion on the city's roads and local trains.
