Metro Line 2B Update: Andheri–Mankhurd Yellow Line 78% Complete, Trial Runs Underway

Mumbai's metro network is on the verge of a significant expansion with the upcoming completion of Metro Line 2B, also known as the Yellow Line. This elevated corridor spans 23.64 km from D. N. Nagar in Andheri to Mandale in Mankhurd, featuring 20 stations. It aims to enhance east-west connectivity across bustling areas like Bandra, Kurla, Chembur, and Mankhurd. The project, costing approximately Rs 10,986 crore, promises to reduce commute times and alleviate road congestion for many daily commuters.

Metro Line 2B is set to transform public transport by offering faster and safer travel options while connecting vital zones in Mumbai. The corridor is designed for a daily ridership exceeding 10 lakh passengers by 2031. It is expected to cut travel times by up to 75%, depending on traffic conditions. Interchange stations will facilitate seamless connections with other metro lines, suburban railways, the monorail, and the proposed Airport Rail Link.

Progress on Metro Line 2B

As of mid-2025, construction work on Metro Line 2B has made significant progress, with overall completion between 78% and 83%. According to a Lokmat Times report, major milestones include the completion of 98% of pile caps and 92% of pier work. Additionally, nearly 87% of girder installation is finished. The Mandale depot, covering 31 hectares, is almost complete at 98% and will serve as the main hub for train stabling and maintenance.

The first phase of the corridor covers a distance of 5.4 km from Mandale to Diamond Garden and includes five stations. Trial runs began in April 2025 for this section. Authorities aim to open this stretch to the public by year-end, with full commissioning planned in stages between 2026 and 2027.

Modern Trains for Enhanced Commuting

Metro Line 2B will feature modern six-coach trains manufactured by BEML. These trains are equipped with regenerative braking systems, onboard CCTV cameras, and mobile charging points for passenger convenience. Out of the sanctioned 96 trains funded by ADB and NDB for Mumbai's metro network, 60 have been delivered so far. Many of these are designated for use on Line 2B.

The Yellow Line aims to promote public transport over private vehicles by easing congestion and potentially reducing pollution levels while improving road safety. This project represents a significant step towards integrated urban mobility in Mumbai, enhancing access to commercial, industrial, and residential areas across the city.
