Mumbai Local Train Services Make History: All-Women Crew Now Maintains Key Power Systems

In a remarkable step towards gender equality in the workforce, an all-women's team has been undergoing training for the past month to maintain the electrical power supply equipment used for Mumbai's Western Railway trains, according to a Midday report.

The team is part of the Mumbai Suburban Traction Distribution (TRD) department of Western Railway. Their responsibility is to ensure the smooth and reliable operation of the 25kV and 110kV equipment that powers the Alternating Current (AC) traction system for suburban trains. These power systems play a vital role in the day-to-day functioning of the train services, making it essential to maintain them efficiently.

An official shared in the same report, "In the changing dynamics of society, women in every field are proving that success has no gender barriers. The formation of an exclusive women's maintenance team for WR's traction power installations is a testament to this belief. Their role in ensuring the continuous operation of the AC traction system is crucial."

Over the past month, the team has undergone extensive training at the Mahalaxmi Traction Power Sub Station, learning to manage and maintain the electrical systems. Today, they have been entrusted with the responsibility of working independently, all while adhering to strict safety protocols.
