Mumbai Local Train Expansion: Fifth and Sixth Lines Underway, Key Bridges Approved
Construction work on the fifth and sixth railway lines between Borivali and Virar is making steady progress. The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has appointed a contractor for two key bridges, numbered 73 and 75, over Vasai Creek, according to a Lokmat report. These bridges will be built between Bhayander and Naigaon stations. Officials have confirmed that the work is expected to be completed within 36 months.
The 26 kilometres railway project is a significant step towards improving Mumbai's suburban railway network. The tender process for the remaining bridges is currently underway, officials added.

Sixth Line Extension To Borivali
Western Railway is also working on extending the sixth railway line. Currently, this line is functional between Khar and Kandivali. By the end of the year, it will be extended up to Borivali. The next phase of the project, covering the Borivali-Virar section, will be executed by MRVC under the 'Mumbai Urban Transport Project 3A' (MUTP 3A). The total cost of this phase is estimated at Rs 2,184 crore.
Mangrove Plantation Work
The project has been granted approval to cut mangroves only after new plantations are completed as compensation. This replantation work is being carried out by the Mangrove Cell of the Forest Department. It started in December 2024 and is expected to be completed within the next three months.
According to MRVC officials, 10 per cent of the overall project work has been completed so far.
