Mumbai Local Train Chaos: Andheri Glitch Cancels 30+ Trains, Commuters Suffer Hours Of Delays

Commuters on Mumbai's Western Railway line faced a chaotic evening on Tuesday after a technical snag at Andheri station disrupted the suburban network. The issue, which arose around 4:45 PM, triggered widespread delays, cancellations, and severe overcrowding during peak travel hours.

Ripple Effect Across the Network

Western Railway (WR) officials confirmed that a point failure occurred between the down fast and up slow lines at Andheri, one of the busiest nodes on the suburban system. The fault immediately hampered the smooth movement of trains in both directions - with slow trains heading to Churchgate running late and, as a consequence, outgoing services from Churchgate also being delayed due to the chain reaction.

Although WR claimed that the glitch was fixed within 30 minutes, disruptions continued well into the evening. More than 30 services had to be cancelled, while many others operated behind schedule, with delays stretching even beyond 8:00 PM.

Commuter Backlash on Social Media

The usually reliable Western Railway came under sharp criticism from passengers, who took to social media to vent their anger. Many reported that trains either remained stranded for long periods or moved painfully slowly. Journeys that typically take 20 minutes stretched to nearly an hour in some cases. Photos and videos of overcrowded platforms and jam-packed coaches flooded online platforms, highlighting the ordeal.

Railway's Efforts to Restore Services

Emergency repair teams were immediately dispatched to Andheri, and repeated announcements were made at stations to update commuters about the situation. Despite the swift intervention, the disruption's cascading effect continued to paralyze services across the suburban line throughout the evening rush.
