Mumbai AC Local Trains: Commuters Demand More, Not Fewer, Services On Western Railway
Commuter associations and passengers have raised concerns over Western Railway's (WR) possible decision to alter train schedules and reduce the number of air-conditioned (AC) local trains, according to the Hindustan Times (HT) report. These concerns follow political pressure, particularly from the Shiv Sena (UBT), which has led to changes in the suburban route's services.
On Thursday, Western Railway authorities met with the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee (DRUCC), a body representing train commuters, to discuss these issues. One of the main points of discussion was the growing demand for AC trains, especially during the morning and evening peak hours.
The controversy began after a protest by Shiv Sena (UBT) on December 3 at Bhayander station, where they opposed the replacement of the 8:24 am Churchgate-bound non-AC local train with an AC local. The protestors argued that AC services were not being adequately utilised. In response, Western Railway revised its schedule last week, increasing the number of coaches on two non-AC services, from 12 to 15, between Bhayander and Churchgate.
However, members of DRUCC have strongly opposed the reduction of AC trains, highlighting the significant demand for them. Rajiv Singhal, a DRUCC member, pointed out in the HT report that AC trains were operating at full capacity, with passengers often unable to board trains during the busy morning and evening hours. He stressed the need for more AC services, suggesting that a new AC train currently lying unused in the Central Railway (CR) be transferred to WR.
WR currently operates nine AC local trains, with 109 trips daily. These trains serve over 125,000 passengers each day and contribute significantly to the railway's revenue, accounting for 23 per cent of total earnings. Despite these figures, political pressure has led to changes in service patterns, raising concerns among commuters about the future of AC trains.
The CR operates six AC locals, with plans to introduce a seventh new AC train that will serve during maintenance periods. However, CR officials have made it clear that there are no current plans to transfer this new train to WR, as it will be used for CR services to prevent cancellations.
Commuter associations continue to urge railway officials and the Ministry of Railways not to give in to political pressure, citing the clear demand for AC trains and their importance to daily commuters. The situation remains tense as both authorities and passengers await further decisions.
