MHADA’s Affordable Housing: No Buyers For 14,000 Homes, Online Survey Begins To Check Demand

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has launched an online survey to assess public interest in its upcoming housing projects in Thane district, according to a Lokmat report. The survey, open until February 28, aims to gather feedback from potential buyers before finalising project plans.

MHADA's Konkan Mandal is developing housing projects in Kohoj Khuntavali and Sivganga Nagar in Ambernath for low- and middle-income groups. However, due to a lack of buyers in previous lotteries, the authority is now conducting this survey to estimate demand before preparing a feasibility report. Citizens are encouraged to participate in large numbers and provide their opinions.

How To Participate

Those interested in purchasing a house can take part in the survey by visiting MHADA's website and filling in the necessary details. QR codes have also been created to help applicants locate the exact project sites via Google Maps.

Affordable Housing Concerns

While MHADA homes in Mumbai receive an overwhelming response, the rising prices have made them unaffordable for many. In recent years, MHADA house prices have increased by nearly 1.5 times, with buyers now demanding a minimum price of ₹27 lakh for affordable housing.

Upcoming Housing Lottery

MHADA is expected to conduct a lottery draw for 2,500 to 3,000 houses around Diwali. These homes may include projects in areas such as Goregaon Hills, Bhandup, Malad, Malvani, Ghatkopar, Chembur, Kurla, and South Mumbai.

The price range for MHADA houses varies:

Rs 27 lakh to Rs 34 lakh for affordable units
Rs 1 crore to Rs 1.5 crore for homes in Malad, Ghatkopar, and Borivali
Rs 7 crore for houses in Tardeo

Shift To The Mumbai Metropolitan Region

Due to the high cost of housing in Mumbai, many homebuyers are now looking for options in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Thane and Virar. However, these projects have also received a lukewarm response due to a lack of essential amenities.

To address this, MHADA has already provided water supply from Surya Dam to some projects. The ongoing survey will help determine whether additional efforts are needed to make housing in Thane, Virar, and Ambernath more attractive to buyers.

Residents looking for affordable housing are encouraged to take part in the survey before February 28 to help shape future housing developments.
