MahaTrafficApp’s Photo Feature Pulled After Complaints Of Fake Challans, Misuse

The Maharashtra Home Department has decided to disable the feature allowing users to upload photos of traffic violations on the MahaTrafficApp, according to a Hindustan Times (HT) report. This decision comes in response to rising complaints of misuse, leading to unverified traffic challans being issued.

The app currently allows citizens to upload photos of violations, including illegal parking and other traffic offences. However, many users have complained that traffic police issue challans solely based on these photos, skipping the required on-site verification process. This practice has raised concerns about fairness in enforcing traffic regulations.

MahaTrafficApp s Photo Feature

According to officials, some police personnel have allegedly misused the app by using personal phones to take photos of violations. These images have been used to pressure motorists into compliance or payments. According to the HT report, a Home Department official revealed, "We had earlier directed traffic authorities not to process challans based on unverified images or those not taken with official handheld devices. Despite these instructions, the practice continued, and in some cases, it was aimed at meeting revenue targets."

Further complaints revealed that some traffic wardens misused the feature to settle personal disputes. Instances include the use of the app for parking disagreements within residential societies, raising further questions about the integrity of the system.

In response, the Home Department formed a committee last year to investigate these concerns and suggest solutions. Based on the committee's recommendations, the government has now decided to remove the photo-uploading feature from the app.

As per the same report, officials believe this step will curb misuse and restore fairness in enforcing traffic laws. By eliminating this feature, the department aims to focus on verified methods of monitoring and penalising traffic violations, ensuring a transparent and just system for all citizens.
