Mumbai's Rainfall Report
Mumbai has experienced an unusual lull in its typical monsoon rains over the past week. The city has recorded only minimal rainfall during this period, with single-digit millimetre amounts and very brief, light showers. In total, only 54 millimetres of rainfall has been recorded in the last seven days, which is notably small compared to Mumbai's usual monsoon figures.
This follows a significant deluge in July, which saw 1,703.7 millimetres of rain- the second highest on record. The first half of the monsoon season has seen a surplus of 53 per cent in rainfall. For August, the average expected rainfall is 585.2 millimetres, with September's norm being slightly lower at 341.4 millimetres.
Upcoming Weather Patterns
The anticipated heavy rains in Mumbai are expected to result from the movement of a low-pressure area across Madhya Pradesh and North Madhya Maharashtra. Currently, this low-pressure system is located over Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal, supported by an organised cyclonic circulation aligned along an east-west axis through Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
The system is forecasted to move westward and position itself over east and central Madhya Pradesh by tomorrow. As it continues its westward progression, it is expected to affect Southwest Madhya Pradesh and North Madhya Maharashtra on August 4. This shift in the monsoon system is likely to enhance the monsoon surge along the Konkan Coast.
The surge of monsoon westerlies from the Arabian Sea will impact the Konkan Coast directly. Mumbai is anticipated to experience adverse weather conditions starting late in the afternoon, with significant rainfall expected to continue for approximately 24 hours. A marked improvement in weather conditions is forecasted for the following day, with clearer skies expected by the afternoon.
