Mumbai's June Rainfall Below Average Despite Early Monsoon

Despite the early arrival of the monsoon, Mumbai has not met its average June rainfall. Typically, the city receives around 537 millimetres of rain in June, but as of June 30, the suburbs recorded only 347 millimetres, nearly 35 per cent less than usual.

The monsoon began on June 9, bringing nearly 100 millimetres of rain in 24 hours. However, subsequent weeks saw reduced rainfall, leading to hot and humid conditions. According to the Indian Express, the rain deficit in the suburbs peaked at 52 per cent last week, while the city division had a 50 per cent deficit. The situation improved slightly after June 20 with moderate to heavy showers.

Sushma Nair, a scientist at IMD Mumbai, explained that the early onset did not lead to sustained heavy rains due to weak westerly winds and a lack of significant weather systems. "The initial burst of rainfall was promising, but the lack of strong westerly winds and absence of low-pressure systems resulted in reduced rainfall activity," Nair said.

IMD had forecast an above-average monsoon nationwide, but Mumbai has yet to see the heavy showers typical of its season. Weather experts like Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather Services noted the absence of key weather systems essential for heavy rainfall. "Without these key weather systems, the city cannot expect the kind of heavy showers needed to meet the average," Palawat noted.

Moderate showers are expected to continue, but intense rainfall is unlikely in the coming days. The IMD issued a yellow alert for heavy showers in Mumbai on Monday, with no warnings beyond Tuesday.

Yellow Alerts In Maharashtra

The IMD has issued yellow alerts for several districts across Maharashtra. Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nashik, Pune, and Kolhapur are expected to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places in the ghat areas.

Additionally, yellow alerts have been issued for Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Washim, and Yavatmal. These areas may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds reaching 30 to 40 kilometres per hour at isolated places.

Orange Alert In Maharashtra

Satara remains under an orange alert, with forecasts indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly in the ghat areas and isolated places.
