Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024: Will Byculla And Versova Determine The Fate Of MVA Coalition?

In the ongoing discussions regarding the distribution of assembly election seats in Mumbai, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition which includes the Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), finds itself at an impasse over Byculla and Versova. According to Times Of India, these constituencies have become significant sticking points, with both parties expressing a strong desire to contest from them. Despite having agreed on most other seats, these two remain unresolved, underscoring the complex dynamics within the alliance.

The contention arises as the Shiv Sena, led by CM Eknath Shinde, holds the Byculla seat with Yamini Jadhav as the incumbent MLA, while the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Bharti Lavekar represents Versova. These seats are crucial for both parties, as they have identified strong candidates eager to contest. The negotiations have seen multiple rounds of talks, indicating the importance of these seats in the political strategy of both the Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT).

Political insiders speculate that the Shiv Sena (UBT) might secure a dominant position in Mumbai, contesting approximately 18-20 of the total 36 seats. The Congress is expected to compete in about 13-14 seats, with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) (SP) potentially receiving two to three seats, and one going to the Samajwadi Party. This distribution reflects the strategic calculations of the MVA, aiming to leverage their collective strength in the forthcoming elections.

A senior MVA functionary mentioned that a consensus had been reached on the majority of seats, with final decisions pending on just five to six constituencies. The ongoing discussions suggest a willingness to exchange seats among the coalition partners to optimize electoral prospects. For instance, seats such as Bandra East, Chandivli, and Byculla might see an exchange between Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT). The anticipated exchange and contention underscore the negotiation complexities within the MVA, especially for seats like Byculla and Versova, which have multiple contenders from both parties.

A leader said in mid-day, "In South Mumbai, if we can't win Byculla, Congress will only have two constituencies-Mumbadevi and Colaba." He also mentioned that in the Versova constituency, 20 Congress members, including former Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey, want to run for election. Congress spokesperson Nazimuddin Rayeen added, "It's hard to tell if we will need to ask the Delhi leadership for help with these constituencies."

The MVA's strategy also involves considering the demographics and previous election outcomes, such as the Marathi-Muslim voter combination that has previously proven advantageous. The coalition's approach to seat-sharing and candidate selection is being carefully calibrated, taking into account the unique electoral landscape of Mumbai. This methodical planning reflects the MVA's aim to maintain a competitive edge in the assembly elections.

As negotiations continue, the MVA's focus remains on finalizing the remaining seats, with the underlying strategy being to retain incumbency advantages where possible, while also facilitating seat exchanges to strengthen the coalition's overall electoral position. This strategic collaboration among the MVA partners highlights their collective effort to navigate the complexities of electoral politics in Mumbai.
