Ladki Bahin Yojana: Maharashtra Government Wins Women’s Trust Despite Opposition’s Conspiracies
The "Ladki Bahin Yojana," launched just a few months ago by the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra, has quickly gained widespread popularity. Despite numerous attempts by opposition parties to discredit the scheme, it has turned out to be a resounding success. Since its launch in July 2024, the initiative has won the trust of women across the state.

Finance Minister Ajit Pawar introduced the scheme in June during his budget presentation, focusing on providing financial support to women. Under this program, eligible women from all social categories receive a monthly financial aid of ₹1,500.
Over 15 Million Women Have Registered
The registration process saw an overwhelming response, with more than 15 million women across Maharashtra signing up for the scheme. Since August, these women have started receiving ₹1,500 in their bank accounts each month, despite efforts by opposition parties to sabotage the initiative.
Fearing the potential success of the scheme just four months before elections, opposition parties launched a campaign to malign it. Initially, they dismissed the "Ladki Bahin Yojana" as empty rhetoric by the government. However, the Maharashtra government kept its promise, ensuring that the payments began in July, much to the relief of the beneficiaries.
Women in Maharashtra have largely ignored the criticisms and continued to register for the scheme.
Opposition's Attempts to Discredit the Scheme
When it became clear that their efforts to undermine the scheme weren't working, opposition leaders shifted tactics. They raised concerns about the state's financial burden, claiming the government lacked the funds to sustain the Ladki Bahin Yojana and that the state was taking loans of ₹3,000 crore weekly. However, Finance Minister Ajit Pawar dismissed these claims, reinforcing the financial viability of the program.
Online Registration Sabotage and Government's Response
Opposition also tried to disrupt the online registration process by spreading misinformation and creating technical hurdles on the official portal. Despite these challenges, the government expanded access by allowing offline registrations to ensure no woman was left out.
Efforts to Combat Misinformation
Maharashtra government's efforts to combat rumours and clarify misunderstandings further strengthened the trust of women in the programme. Some rumours even suggested that the Election Commission's model code of conduct would disrupt the scheme, but the government firmly rejected these claims.
Uddhav Thackeray's Threat and Opposition's Failure
Former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray issued a direct political threat, stating that if he returned to power, he would discontinue the scheme. He, along with other opposition leaders, also raised ethical concerns, accusing the government of "buying votes" by distributing money. Videos portraying this message circulated on social media, but by that time, the first payments had already been deposited into beneficiaries' accounts, rendering these claims ineffective.
Despite a few opposition-led protests demanding that cooking gas prices be lowered instead of receiving the ₹1,500, the Ladki Bahin Yojana has won widespread support. Women across the state have placed their trust in the government, solidifying the initiative's success and making it clear that this scheme is here to stay, even beyond the election period.
In a significant move, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has assured that the scheme will not only continue before the elections but will remain in place afterward as well.
