Ghatkopar Commuters At Risk? Crowding And Debris Spark Safety Warnings

Development work at Ghatkopar railway station has resulted in extreme barricading, leading to severe crowding on the narrow edge of platform one, according to a Mid-day report. This situation poses a serious risk to commuters. In addition, the debris from the demolished stone ramp of the foot overbridge remains piled up at the south end of the platform, occupying crucial space.

The railway authorities have been upgrading the Ghatkopar station after several reports highlighted its dangerous conditions. The station serves thousands of daily passengers, including those using Mumbai Metro Line 1.

Long-Standing Concerns

A report published on August 30, 2019, titled 'Next Disaster Arriving on Platform No. 1,' had drawn attention to the unsafe conditions at the station. Following this, then-MP Manoj Kotak took up the matter with Piyush Goyal, the railway minister at the time. During a public event on September 13, 2019, Goyal directed officials to draft a comprehensive upgrade plan for the station.

The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is now executing this upgrade, which involves multiple bridges and interconnected elevated decks. While the first phase of the project has been completed, the second phase-closer to the Mumbai Metro station-is now underway. However, the ongoing work and the barricades have become a major inconvenience for passengers. Commuters have urged the railway authorities to clear debris and remove barricades as soon as possible to ensure safety on the heavily used platform.

High Passenger Traffic

According to a passenger survey conducted by the MRVC and transport consultancy firm Wilbur Smith Associates, Ghatkopar station has one of the highest passenger densities. The situation has worsened with the launch of Mumbai Metro's Aqua Line 3 at Marol, Red Line 7 at Andheri, and Yellow Line 2A at DN Nagar.

Commuters have suggested that train services should begin from Ghatkopar station, similar to Andheri station, to better manage the crowd. "The number of passengers has doubled in recent years, and the congestion is becoming unmanageable," commuter Sukesh Joshi said. Activist Vidyasagar Jagadeeshan also stressed the need for improved train services from Ghatkopar.

Railway Authorities' Response

The MRVC has assured that efforts are being made to speed up the construction work. "We understand the inconvenience caused to passengers and are working to complete the upgrade as soon as possible. Despite challenges such as limited working hours due to running train traffic, we are committed to ensuring passenger safety and convenience," MRVC Chief Public Relations Officer Sunil Udasi said.

Ongoing Work

- Elevated deck foundation work on platform 1: The foundation work is expected to be completed within two days, after which the barricades will be removed as soon as possible.
- Pile foundation work: The next stage of construction will begin tonight on platform 1.

Passengers have been advised to remain cautious while navigating the station. Authorities have assured that once the upgrade is complete, Ghatkopar station will be significantly safer and more efficient for commuters.
