Empowering Mumbaikars: IIT-B's Mumbai Flood App Delivers Instant Flood Alert
A collaborative effort led by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) has resulted in the creation of a new hyperlocal weather forecasting system tailored specifically for Mumbai. This initiative, developed in partnership with the MCGM Centre for Municipal Capacity Building and Research (MCMCR), aims to provide detailed weather predictions at the neighbourhood level through the newly launched Mumbai Flood App.
Mumbai Flood App Features

The Mumbai Flood App integrates data from multiple sources including the Indian Meteorology Department's (IMD) primary observatories in Colaba, Santacruz, and Marine Lines. It also utilizes data from over 60 automatic weather stations and rainfall monitoring stations spread across Mumbai and its suburbs. The app offers:
1. Hourly Rainfall Predictions: Users can access forecasts for the next 24 hours, providing real-time updates crucial for planning daily activities.
2. Daily Forecasts: Extended predictions cover the subsequent three days, aiding residents in making informed decisions about upcoming weather conditions.
How To Use The Mumbai Flood App?
Residents of Mumbai can download the Mumbai Flood App on Android devices. The app not only delivers weather forecasts but also issues flood alerts based on water level measurements gathered from key locations such as the Mithi River and Vakola Nala. These measurements are supplemented by crowd-sourced data contributed by app users.
Users are encouraged to actively participate in data collection by uploading information about flood conditions in their areas. This data includes location details, water levels, and the user's observations. Such contributions are immediately made available to the public through the app, enhancing community awareness and preparedness during flood situations.
Community-Driven Innovation
Subimal Ghosh, the convener of IIT-B's climate studies programme, emphasized the app's community-driven approach, stating, "This is an app made for Mumbaikars by Mumbaikars." He highlighted the significance of citizen-contributed data in aiding government bodies to formulate effective flood management strategies for future seasons.
