Assembly Polls Is Maharashtra Heading For A Hung Assembly Early Trends Indicate

Early Trends and Projections
As per initial data reported by India Today, the Mahayuti is leading in 102 seats, while the MVA is ahead in over 76 constituencies. These numbers largely reflect postal ballot counts. However, other channels have presented varying projections, adding to the uncertainty.

According to CNN News, the Mahayuti is leading in 71 seats, while the INDIA alliance is ahead in 35. Meanwhile, other sources place the BJP-led NDA with a significant lead of 134 seats, compared to 50 for the opposition.

Exit Polls and Possible Scenarios
Exit polls have painted a mixed picture. While several predict the Mahayuti has the upper hand, at least two have indicated the possibility of a hung assembly. This uncertainty has added to the speculation about post-election alliances and power-sharing arrangements, should neither coalition secure a clear majority.

Key Contestants and Alliances
The Mahayuti alliance comprises the BJP, which contested 149 seats, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena with 81 seats, and the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP, fielding candidates in 59 constituencies. On the other hand, the opposition MVA includes the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), which contested 95 seats, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) with 86, and the Congress, fielding 101 candidates.

Voter Turnout and Counting Process
Polling for the Maharashtra Assembly was held on November 20, with a turnout of 66.05%, a notable increase from the 61.1% recorded in 2019. The counting process began on Saturday morning, starting with postal ballots at 8 a.m., followed by EVM votes at 8:30 a.m. Election officials have estimated a minimum of 20 counting rounds per constituency, with results expected later in the day.

The Road Ahead
As the counting continues, both alliances are strategizing for various scenarios. Should no single coalition secure the majority mark, the focus will shift to independents and smaller parties, who could play kingmakers in a hung assembly.
