21-Year-Old Stabbed To Death On Mumbai Local Train, Family Seeks Death Penalty

The brutal killing of a 21-year-old passenger aboard a Mumbai local train has left his family shattered, with his mother and sister demanding the harshest punishment for the accused. The incident, which took place on a crowded train during the evening rush, has also raised serious concerns about passenger safety and the presence of deadly weapons on public transport.

Family Struggles To Come To Terms With Loss

Overcome with grief, Mayank Lohar's mother broke down while speaking to reporters, struggling to accept the sudden loss of her son.

"My child hasn't eaten anything; he is hungry," she said, speaking through tears and shock.

Appealing for justice, she added, "Punish him (the accused)...he (the victim) would never pick a fight with anyone."

Describing her son as a quiet and peaceful young man, she said, "He wouldn't even step out of the house unnecessarily...What can I do? Where do I go?"

Argument On Train Turned Deadly

According to police, Lohar was travelling in the first-class compartment of a Churchgate-Nallasopara fast local train on Tuesday night when he became involved in an argument with another passenger.

The dispute reportedly began between Goregaon and Kandivali stations over whether the compartment door should remain open or closed during heavy rainfall.

Investigators said the argument quickly escalated. The accused allegedly pulled out a large knife from his bag and stabbed Lohar, causing fatal injuries. The 21-year-old died on the spot.

Eyewitnesses Capture Shocking Moments

A video recorded by fellow passengers showed the accused, identified as Roshan Suvarna, walking away after the attack.

Passengers could be heard expressing shock in the recording, saying, "Ye mar diya usko, mar diya (He killed him-he actually killed him)."

The footage has since become a key part of the investigation into the incident.

Sister Questions Safety, Seeks Death Penalty

Lohar's elder sister questioned the lack of intervention during the incident and demanded strict action against the accused.

"Where were the police? Where were the fellow passengers?" she asked.

Defending her brother's character, she said, "My brother never used to travel hanging on the train door. You can ask anyone in our residential building that he wouldn't fight with anyone. He was just a 21-year-old boy; his entire life was ahead of him."

She further added, "Today, my brother died, tomorrow somebody else's brother will die".

Calling for the death penalty, she said, "If he doesn't get the death penalty, then tomorrow, someone else will die. I am talking about all those criminals who carry these weapons with them. The weapon was used in the first-class compartment."

Police Reveal Sequence Of Events

The Western Railway Police said initial investigations suggest that passengers had first confronted and beaten the accused during the dispute.

"Between Goregaon and Kandivali, two passengers fought over closing the train's door amid rainfall. During this time, the accused stabbed the victim with a knife. He then fled the scene," Datta Khuprekar, Senior Police Inspector, Borivali Railway Police, said.

Police are continuing their investigation into the case as questions mount over security measures on Mumbai's suburban rail network.
