Manipal Road Flooded, Drivers Warned to Avoid Udupi-Manipal Route

Life across Udupi district was thrown out of gear on Tuesday, May 20, as heavy rains lashed the region, leading to widespread waterlogging and artificial flooding in multiple areas. Among the worst-affected was the Udupi-Manipal road, where torrential downpours transformed the key thoroughfare into a river-like stream, leaving commuters stranded and forcing motorists to take alternate routes.

This vital road serves as a crucial link between Udupi and Manipal, the bustling hub known for its educational and healthcare institutions.

The forceful flow of rainwater posed serious risks, particularly for two-wheeler riders, many of whom were seen struggling to control their vehicles as water levels rose. Even four-wheelers and heavy vehicles found it extremely challenging to navigate the submerged road.

A video capturing the deluge has gone viral on social media, showing water gushing down the stretch, sweeping away piles of mud, stones, and debris. The visuals highlight the vulnerability of the region's infrastructure, with the road near Inox in Manipal seen completely submerged.

Eyewitnesses described the road as resembling a river, with murky water surging rapidly and carrying slush, loose soil, and construction waste. While two-wheeler riders tried to maneuver cautiously through the water, larger vehicles slowed to a crawl.

Residents blamed the lack of a proper drainage system as the root cause of the flooding. "Every time it rains heavily, this road turns chaotic. Authorities must act urgently to upgrade the drainage system," said a daily commuter.

Though no injuries were reported, the incident has reignited concerns over road safety and poor urban planning in one of Karnataka's most significant urban corridors.

Authorities are expected to inspect the site and assess the damage. Until then, commuters have been advised to avoid the flooded route and opt for safer alternatives.
