When Will Ashok Leyland's EV Plant In UP Be Inaugurated? Find Out Here

Ashok Leyland's state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Uttar Pradesh is set to be inaugurated on January 9. The event will be marked by the rollout of the plant's first electric buses, signaling a new chapter in the state's push towards modern manufacturing and sustainable mobility.

The plant's location is symbolic of industrial transformation. It has been established on the very land in Lucknow that once housed the now-defunct Scooters India Limited (SIL), representing a shift from a struggling public sector unit to a vibrant, future-ready private investment.

The project's journey from conception to completion has been notably swift. After the state government handed over the land two years ago, a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the Hinduja Group flagship in September 2023. Following the issuance of a Letter of Intent in January 2024, the company erected this world-class facility in an impressive 14 months, backed by an investment of approximately ₹1,000 crore.

Designed as an integrated chassis and bus manufacturing unit, the Lucknow plant will commence with an annual production capacity of 2,500 vehicles, scalable to 5,000 units in subsequent phases. It is engineered for flexibility, capable of producing a range of advanced commercial vehicles, including those powered by internal combustion engines (ICE), electric vehicles (EVs), and alternative fuels, catering to both domestic and international markets.

"This plant is a cornerstone in UP's industrial expansion. It will profoundly strengthen our automobile manufacturing ecosystem and position the state at the forefront of the future of mobility," stated State Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta 'Nandi'.

The rapid establishment of the facility is attributed to Uttar Pradesh's proactive 'Investment Promotion Policy for FDI/FCI, Fortune Global 500 and Fortune India 500 Companies - 2023'. The policy is designed to offer global investors a fast-track, transparent process with a suite of incentives such as land and capital subsidies, SGST reimbursement, exemptions on stamp and electricity duties, and special incentives for skill development and green initiatives.

True to this vision, the Ashok Leyland plant itself is a model of sustainable industry. It has been built to the highest environmental standards, featuring IGBC Platinum Grade certification, a 1 MW on-site solar plant, a zero liquid discharge system, 100% rainwater harvesting, and a modern sewage treatment plant, aligning perfectly with the state's green industrial vision.
