Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has warned residents about fake "digital arrest" threats amid rising cybercrime, stressing that Indian law has no such provision and urging people to treat these claims as scams and immediately alert authorities instead of panicking or sharing personal information.

The advisory comes as cyber fraud incidents grow across India, and on the same day Yogi Adityanath meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in New Delhi, discussions that gain attention amid talk of a possible expansion of the Uttar Pradesh ministry.

Yogi Adityanath explained that fraudsters now rely on fear and pressure to cheat people, often calling or sending messages that threaten "digital arrest" through phone, chat, or video calls, then demanding money or sensitive data, even though no Indian statute recognises any concept called digital arrest.

The Chief Minister’s message described how smartphones and computers, while useful for daily work, have also widened the field for online crimes such as phishing, identity theft, impersonation, and other financial fraud, with many victims unaware that these convincing threats are purely criminal tricks.

According to the advisory, the Uttar Pradesh government is improving cybercrime cells, building coordination among law enforcement agencies, and running awareness drives, but Yogi Adityanath stressed that people must also verify every alarming message and never reveal OTPs, banking passwords, or other confidential information to any caller.

The Chief Minister urged families to focus on senior citizens, who are often targeted because fraudsters pretend to be officials, create urgency, and scare them with threats, and said that simple guidance at home and in neighbourhoods can prevent many cases of online cheating and harassment.

The message emphasised that any claim of digital arrest should immediately raise doubt, and residents should instead collect details of the caller, avoid transferring money, and report such attempts to local police, cybercrime helplines, or official portals so that investigators can track patterns and suspects.

Alongside the cybercrime advisory, political attention turned to Yogi Adityanath’s schedule in New Delhi, where the Chief Minister met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, BJP national president and Union minister JP Nadda, and BJP national working president Nitin Nabin for discussions on various current issues.

These meetings gained importance because they took place while speculation continued about a likely expansion of Yogi Adityanath’s ministry, though no formal announcement was made, and details of any possible changes in the state cabinet were not disclosed by either the Chief Minister or the party leadership.
