Lucknow, Sept 24: With a poor monsoon season and scanty rainfall, some districts of Uttar Pradesh are facing a fear of drought.

On Tuesday, Sept 22, in an attempt to invoke rain gods, dozens of women, with buckets and mugs in their hands, went to Aligarwa Kapilvastu police station and bathed a policeman in Siddharthnagar district of Uttar Pradesh.

Inspector Ranvijay Singh

Locals of the village believe that if the ruler of the district is bathed publicly by women, then that area receives rains.

When the farmers faced large-scale destruction of their crops, then two dozens of women decided to bathe SHO of Aligarwa Kapilvastu police station Ranvijay Singh.

Initially, Singh refused their demand, but later, he budged, when some women started crying. While respecting the belief of women, Singh sat quietly and let women bathe him. However, other police officials manged to escape from those women.

Both Hindu and Muslim women participated in the ritual and requested Singh not to accept bribe for next three days.

After offering bath to Singh, women reached Lord Shiva's temple, where they offered water. Later one of the elderly villager claimed that the Lord Indra smiled and it started raining!

In Uttar Pradesh, there are other bizarre beliefs to invoke rain gods like naked women plough fields after midnight.
