Vaikuntha Chaturdashi: Celebrating Unity of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu

Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, also known as Baikuntha Chaturdashi, is a significant Hindu festival. It is celebrated on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksha. This festival is unique because it honours both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. It falls a day before Kartik Purnima or Dev Diwali, making it a sacred occasion for devotees.

Vaikuntha Chaturdashi holds great importance in the Hindu calendar. It is one of the rare days when both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are worshipped together. The festival is observed in various parts of India, including Varanasi, Rishikesh, Gaya, and Maharashtra. The day is marked by special rituals and prayers dedicated to these deities.

Vaikuntha Chaturdashi Unity Festival

On Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, devotees offer prayers to Lord Vishnu during the Nishitha (midnight) muhurat. They present a thousand lotuses to Lord Vishnu while reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama. This practice is considered highly auspicious. Meanwhile, Lord Shiva's devotees perform rituals at dawn, known as Arunodaya.

In Varanasi, the Manikarnika Snan takes place at Manikarnika Ghat. Devotees take a holy dip in the river as part of their worship. Tulsi leaves are offered to Lord Shiva, while Bael leaves are given to Lord Vishnu. These rituals highlight the devotion and reverence for both deities on this special day.

Historical Significance

The festival's significance is rooted in Hindu mythology. According to the Shiva Purana, on Kartik Chaturdashi, Lord Vishnu went to Varanasi to worship Lord Shiva with a thousand lotus flowers. However, he found one lotus missing and offered one of his eyes instead. Pleased with this devotion, Lord Shiva restored Vishnu's eye and gifted him the Sudarshana Chakra.
