Tamil New Year 2025: Celebrating Puthandu with Traditional Rituals and Foods

Puthandu, also known as Puthuvarusham or Varusha Pirappu, marks the Tamil New Year. Celebrated on 14th April 2025, this festival is a significant event in Tamil Nadu. It falls on a Monday this year. The festival aligns with the solar calendar, marking the day when the sun is directly over the equator. This day is also known as the equinox.

The Tamil New Year is celebrated when the sun is midway across both hemispheres. This point of balance is seen as an ideal start to the year. It symbolises balance in life and harmony with nature. People believe that this balance brings peace and prosperity.

Puthandu 2025 Tamil New Year Celebration

On the eve of Puthandu, families prepare a special tray. This tray includes three fruits: mango, banana, and jackfruit. Betel leaves, areca nuts, gold or silver jewellery, money, flowers, and a mirror are also placed on it. Viewing this tray early in the morning is considered auspicious.

After viewing the tray, people take an early morning bath. They then offer pongal to the Gods as part of their prayers. Many visit temples to seek blessings for a fruitful year ahead.

Puthandu is celebrated with a variety of traditional foods. Popular dishes include Mangai Pachadi, Payasam, Poli, and Sakkarai Pongal. Other favourites are Avial, Manga Urgai, Vepamboo Rasam, Panagam, Neer Mor, and Aplam.
