Spring Cleaning Checklist: Identify and Clean Often Forgotten Areas in Indian Homes
A spring cleaning checklist helps you clear dust, grime, and clutter after months indoors. Many people clean floors and shelves but miss hidden spots that hold dirt and germs. This guide lists often-forgotten areas in the home and simple ways to clean them. Use it for a fast deep clean that suits busy Indian homes.
Pick one room at a time and set a short timer. Open windows for fresh air if you can. Keep microfibre cloths, a soft brush, dish soap, baking soda, and a mild disinfectant ready. Wear gloves for bathroom and bin work. Switch off power before cleaning fans, vents, or switch plates.

Dust gathers high up and then falls back down. Start with ceiling corners, fan blades, and curtain rods. Wipe the tops of cupboards and tall wardrobes. Clean air vents and exhaust covers with a brush and soapy water. Finish with walls near switches, where hands leave marks.
Light fittings and switch plates
Light fittings collect fine dust and dead insects. Turn off the main switch and let bulbs cool. Wipe shades and holders with a damp cloth, then dry. Clean switch plates, doorbell buttons, and plug boards using a barely damp cloth. Keep water away from openings and gaps.
Doors, handles, and hidden edges
Door handles and cupboard pulls are touched many times daily. Wipe them with mild disinfectant and dry after. Clean the top edge of doors, where dust sits unseen. Check cupboard door edges and hinges for grease or grime, especially in kitchens. Use an old toothbrush for tight corners.
Skirting, window tracks, and grills
Skirting boards trap dust and hair, yet are easy to miss. Vacuum them with a brush tool, then wipe. For window tracks, loosen dirt with a dry brush first. Wipe with soapy water and dry well. Clean window grills and mesh, which can hold thick dust in cities.
Behind and under large furniture
Move sofas, beds, and side tables if it is safe. Dust bunnies, wrappers, and hair collect under them. Vacuum first, then mop the floor. Wipe the back of the sofa, where fabric holds dust. Check wall corners behind furniture for cobwebs and damp marks.
Sofas, cushions, and soft items
Remove cushions and vacuum seams and gaps. If covers are washable, follow label steps and dry fully to avoid smell. Spot clean armrests, where oils build up. Don’t forget throws and small rugs. Sun drying helps in many Indian homes, but avoid harsh sun for delicate colours.
Mattress, pillows, and bed base
Vacuum the mattress top and sides, focusing on seams. Sprinkle a little baking soda, wait 15 minutes, then vacuum again. Wash pillow covers and protectors. Wipe the bed frame and headboard, which can hold dust. Check the bed base for stored items and clean that space too.
Wardrobes: top shelves and back panels
Wardrobes look tidy but hide dust at the top and back. Take out items from one section and wipe shelves with a damp cloth. Clean the top surface of the wardrobe, which is often ignored. Wash or wipe storage boxes. Return items after sorting to reduce clutter.
Kitchen: grease zones beyond the stove
Kitchen spring cleaning should target grease, not just spills. Clean the exhaust fan cover and the area around it. Wipe the tops of wall cabinets. Pull the fridge out if possible and clean the sides and back grill gently. Check the toaster, mixer base, and kettle for sticky dust.
Fridge seals, drains, and small trays
Fridge door seals can hold crumbs and mould. Wipe them with warm soapy water and dry. Clean drip trays if your model has them. Check the veggie drawer corners for old bits. Wipe bottle racks and handles. Keep food in a cool bag during longer cleaning to limit warming.
Bins, drains, and sink overflow
Kitchen and bathroom bins need more than a liner change. Wash the bin with soap, rinse, then disinfect and dry. Clean the bin lid and pedal. For drains, remove hair and food bits first. Flush with hot water and a little baking soda. Scrub the sink overflow hole with a small brush.
Bathroom: taps, tiles, and fan covers
Water marks build up on taps, shower heads, and tile edges. Soak a cloth in vinegar and wrap it on tap bases if needed, then rinse well. Clean grout lines with a soft brush and soap. Wash the exhaust fan cover, where lint collects. Dry surfaces to reduce new stains.
Laundry area: machine edges and filters
Washing machines collect lint and soap film. Wipe the lid and control panel with a damp cloth. Clean the rubber door seal on front-load models. Check and rinse the lint filter if your machine has one. Run a drum clean cycle if available, using the maker’s advised cleaner or method.
Electronics and small high-touch items
Remote controls, phone cases, and keyboards carry grime from hands. Switch devices off first. Use a dry brush for crumbs, then wipe with a lightly damp cloth. Clean TV edges and set-top boxes where dust blocks vents. Wipe gaming controllers and chargers. Keep liquids away from ports and buttons.
Entryway and balcony touchpoints
Dust and pollen enter through doors and windows. Shake and wash doormats if possible. Wipe shoe racks and the floor beneath them. Clean balcony rails, window sills, and plant trays where mud dries. Check the main door frame and handle. These spots help reduce dirt spread inside the home.
Quick often-forgotten checklist
Use this spring cleaning checklist as you work: fan blades, vent covers, light fittings, switch plates, top of doors, skirting boards, window tracks, sofa backs, under beds, wardrobe tops, fridge seals, exhaust covers, bin lids, sink overflow, washing machine seals, remotes, and doormats.
