Delhi Assembly SUV incident: masked driver hits e-rickshaw and crashes gate, witnesses say

Eyewitnesses reported a masked man driving an SUV at high speed into the Delhi Assembly premises on Monday, striking an e-rickshaw outside Gate No. 2 and crashing into an iron gate. The driver then placed a flower bouquet in the Speaker's vehicle on the porch and fled. The e-rickshaw suffered damage, the driver said.

A masked driver breached security at the Delhi Assembly on Monday. Eyewitnesses said an SUV sped through Gate No. 2 at about 2 pm. The vehicle struck an e-rickshaw outside and smashed into the iron gate. After entering, the driver left a flower bouquet in the speaker’s vehicle. The SUV then sped away within minutes.

Police detained three people, including the driver Sarabjeet Singh, and seized the SUV from north Delhi. Singh, 37, is believed to support the Kisan Andolan farmers agitation. Police said Singh shared posts backing farmer leaders who died in 2020-21. Some posts were later deleted by Singh or original accounts.

Delhi Assembly security breach details

Police said the SUV had a Uttar Pradesh registration from Pilibhit. It came from the Delhi University side and took a sharp turn. The vehicle broke the boom barriers and forced its way inside. A senior police officer said Singh drove dangerously. Police said the manner suggested an intent to run over security staff.

An assembly official said the breach raised worries about safety at the Vidhan Sabha. "The car managed to break through a closed gate and remained parked inside for nearly five minutes without raising an alarm,\" the official said. The assembly has six gates, the official added. Gate No. 2 is for VIP movement and opens mainly for special events.

Delhi Assembly incident eyewitness accounts

The e-rickshaw driver said the SUV seemed to be moving fast. The driver estimated the speed at around 60 to 70 kmph. \"I had parked my e-rickshaw outside Gate No. 2 of the Vidhan Sabha and was waiting for customers near the metro gate when I heard a loud crash as the car hit the iron gate,\" said Gaurav. Gaurav usually carries passengers between Vidhan Sabha Metro station and Majnu ka Tila.

Gaurav said a crowd gathered before Gaurav reached the vehicle. Gaurav said the e-rickshaw suffered damage during the impact. The rear portion partly came apart, and the tail light broke. Gaurav also said the handle bent. \"I wont even get any claim for the repairs,\" Gaurav said. Gaurav estimated repairs at around Rs 4,000.

Gaurav said a Central Reserve Police Force CRPF guard at the gate tried to alert others. Gaurav said the SUV escaped before any response arrived. Police said several teams checked the assembly complex after the breach. A bomb disposal squad also joined the sweep. Police said nothing suspicious was found during the search.

Delhi Assembly case and police probe

Police said the incident unfolded quickly and lasted five to seven minutes. \"It is too early to comment on the motive. The accused is being questioned and we are probing all angles,\" police said. A case was filed at Civil Lines under several sections. These included attempt to murder and criminal trespass with preparation to commit offence.

Police also added charges for using criminal force against a public servant. Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act was included. Other provisions related to blocking public servants during duty were also applied. Police continued questioning the detained people as part of the ongoing probe into the Delhi Assembly breach.
