Kalabhairav Jayanti 2024: Understanding the Rituals and Significance

Kalabhairav Jayanti, also known as Kaal Bhairav Jayanti, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated on 22nd November 2024, which falls on a Friday. This day marks the birth anniversary of Lord Kala Bhairav, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. Devotees honour this day with various rituals and prayers to seek blessings and guidance.

The term "Bhairava" comes from "Bhiru," meaning fear. Lord Kala Bhairav is known as Dandapani, the punisher. This avatar of Lord Shiva is associated with annihilation and teaching life lessons. He appears with four hands, holding a sword or noose, a skull, a drum, and a trident. His mount is a dog.

Kalabhairav Jayanti 2024 Rituals

Legend has it that Brahma became arrogant as the Universe's creator. To teach him humility, Kaal Bhairav severed one of Brahma's five heads with his trident. This act was to show that pride leads to downfall. As a result, Brahma has fewer devotees compared to other deities.

On Kalabhairav Jayanti, devotees worship Lord Kala Bhairav along with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. They offer fruits, flowers, and sweets during the puja. After completing the puja, they recite the Kalabhairav Katha. Devotees also take ritualistic baths and perform special pujas for deceased ancestors.

Many keep vigil all night, narrating stories of Lord Kala Bhairav and chanting mantras. The midnight aarti is performed with traditional instruments like drums and bells. Some devotees observe a strict fast, believing it removes obstacles and brings success.

In some regions, people feed dogs with milk and sweets as Lord Kala Bhairav is believed to ride on a dog. Visiting temples in the evening for the Shodashopachar Puja is also common.
