Gowri Habba, also known as Hartalika, is a significant festival celebrated by Hindu women. This festival is dedicated to Goddess Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva. Women observe a strict fast and perform rituals to seek blessings for their families.

On Gowri Habba, women and young girls wear new traditional attire. They adorn themselves with jewellery and other accessories. This is part of the Solah Shringar, which includes sixteen adornments that married women follow as per Hindu traditions.

Gowri Habba on Friday, September 6, 2024. Pratahkala Gowri Puja Muhurat is from 06:13 am to 08:40 am. The duration is 02 hours 27 mins. The Tadige Tithi begins at 12:21 on 05 September 2024 and Tadige Tithi ends at 15:01 on 06 September 2024.

Gowri Habba 2024 Puja Rituals

Goddess Parvati is the primary deity worshipped during Gowri Habba. She is revered as the supreme goddess who blesses women with long life and prosperity for their families.

Women make symbolic idols of Gowri from turmeric. The idol of Goddess Parvati is then placed on a plate with cereal for worship. The Puja must be performed with dedication and cleanliness.

Women also observe a strict fast and practice austerity throughout the day. They pray for the long and healthy life of their husbands and children.

The festival features a variety of traditional foods. Some popular dishes include Payasam, Rasam, Sweet Pongal, Kalasidda Anna, and Ambode. These dishes are prepared with great care and are part of the offerings made during the Puja.

Gowri Habba 2024 Significance

Goddess Gowri, wife of Lord Shiva and mother of Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya, is worshipped as the most powerful goddess on this day. It is believed that on the third day in the month of Bhadra, during Gowri Habba, Mata Parvati visited her parents' home after marriage. A day later, her son Lord Ganesha came to take her back to Mount Kailasha, the abode of Lord Shiva.

Gowri Habba is celebrated to seek blessings from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Women get ready in new clothes and jewellery. They make a resolution to observe a strict fast and practice austerity throughout the day.

Women pray for the long life of their husbands and health of their children. They listen to the Katha and seek blessings from their mothers-in-law, mothers, and other elders. They stay awake throughout the night and break their fast the next morning after taking a bath and worshipping the deities.

On this day, Hindu women wear new traditional attires. They make beautiful symbolic idols of Gowri from turmeric for Puja. The idol of Goddess Parvati is then mounted on a plate with cereal for worship. The Puja must be performed with utmost dedication and cleanliness according to the Gowri Habba Vrata.
