Appliances Required

  • Heavy saucepan
  • Pan or mold for setting the barfi

How To Prepare

1. If you're using fresh coconut, start by grating it finely. Freshly grated coconut gives the best texture and flavor. If you're using desiccated coconut, ensure it's unsweetened and soak it in a little warm milk for about 10 minutes to soften it.

2. In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat the ghee over medium flame. Add the grated coconut and sauté it for a few minutes until it starts to release its aroma and turns slightly golden.

3. Lower the flame and add the condensed milk and sugar to the coconut. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.

4. Continue to cook the mixture on low heat, stirring continuously to prevent it from sticking to the pan. The mixture will start to thicken as the moisture evaporates. This process takes about 10-15 minutes.

5. Once the mixture has thickened and starts to leave the sides of the pan, add the cardamom powder and mix well. The cardamom adds a lovely fragrance and enhances the flavor of the Barfi.

6. Grease a square or rectangular tray with a little ghee to prevent the Barfi from sticking. You can also line it with parchment paper for easier removal.

7. Pour the cooked coconut mixture into the prepared tray and spread it evenly using a spatula. Sprinkle the sliced almonds or pistachios on top, pressing them gently into the mixture. If using edible silver leaf (varak), place it on top for an elegant touch.

8. Allow the mixture to cool completely and set. You can leave it at room temperature or refrigerate it for about 1-2 hours.

9. Once the Coconut Barfi has set, use a sharp knife to cut it into square or diamond-shaped pieces. Serve the Barfi on a decorative plate and enjoy this delightful treat with family and friends.
