Baked Beans Recipe: A Simple and Delicious Comfort Food for All Occasions
Baked beans are a classic dish enjoyed by many. This recipe uses navy, Great Northern, or pea beans, but you can also try black, kidney, or lima beans for a different taste. The dish combines beans with bacon, onions, brown sugar, and molasses for a rich flavour. It's perfect as a side dish or a main course.
- 2 pounds (900 g) navy, Great Northern, or pea beans
- 1 pound (450 g) bacon, diced
- 2 large onions, chopped
- 1½ cups brown sugar
- ¾ cup molasses

- Soak dry beans overnight. Alternatively, use 4 cans of cooked beans.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.
- Pour the mixture into a casserole dish, bean pot, or Dutch oven.
- Add water from the soaked beans or fresh water to barely cover the beans. Canned beans may need less water.
- Bake for 2½ hours. Check after an hour and add more water if needed to maintain moisture. If too much liquid remains, remove the lid and cook longer.
Notes and Tips
You can use a slow cooker instead of an oven. Cook on high for 2½ hours or on low for 5 hours. This method is convenient if you want to set it and forget it.
