Sharing the earthquake details, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) in a tweet said, "EQ of M: 5.1, On: 25/02/2025 06:10:25 IST, Lat: 19.52 N, Long: 88.55 E, Depth: 91 Km, Location: Bay of Bengal."
Seismic Activity in Kolkata
Residents in Kolkata experienced mild tremors earlier this year on January 8 due to an earthquake in Tibet and parts of Nepal. Despite these occurrences, there have been no reports of damage in West Bengal or Odisha from today's quake.
Comparing Recent Earthquakes
In contrast, Delhi experienced a magnitude 4.0 earthquake on February 17, which caused stronger tremors as it was centred within the city at a depth of just 5 km. This led to panic among residents who rushed out of their homes.
While today's earthquake near Kolkata had a higher magnitude than Delhi's recent quake, its impact was less severe due to its deeper origin point. The NCS shared details about both events on X, highlighting differences in epicentre locations and depths.
The recent seismic activities serve as reminders of the region's vulnerability to earthquakes. However, the lack of damage from today's event is reassuring for residents in affected areas.
As authorities continue monitoring seismic activity across India, they emphasise preparedness and awareness among citizens to mitigate potential risks associated with future earthquakes.
