Yemen Delays Nimisha Priya's Execution: What Led to the Last-Minute Pause?
Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kollengode in Kerala's Palakkad district, faced execution in Yemen for the alleged murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi in 2017. Her death sentence was issued in 2020. However, her execution, which was scheduled for today, has been postponed due to efforts by Indian authorities and intervention by the 'Grand Mufti of India'.
Despite the Indian government's earlier statement to the Supreme Court about its limited ability to intervene due to diplomatic constraints with Yemen, Nimisha's execution has been deferred. She was imprisoned under the control of the Houthis, with whom India lacks diplomatic relations. This postponement offers a glimmer of hope for Nimisha and her family.

Role of the Grand Mufti
The 'Grand Mufti of India', Sheikh Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar, played a crucial role in delaying Nimisha's execution. He reached out to Islamic scholars in Yemen who then engaged in discussions regarding her case. Talks were initiated between representatives of a Sufi scholar and a member representing Mahdi's family at Musliyar's behest.
Speaking to the media at Karanthur near Kozhikode, Aboobacker Musliar said he had appealed to religious scholars in Yemen, urging them to intervene on humanitarian grounds."We have just received official confirmation from Yemeni authorities that Nimisha Priya's execution has been stayed based on our request. Let us all pray for her safe release," he said.
Efforts by Indian officials also contributed significantly to this development. They maintained regular contact with local jail authorities and the prosecutor's office in Yemen. This coordination ultimately led to securing more time for Nimisha's family to negotiate a resolution with Mahdi's family.
Future Steps for Nimisha Priya
While this postponement is a relief for Nimisha Priya and her family, their ultimate goal remains to halt her execution entirely. The Grand Mufti mentioned ongoing efforts to seek a pardon from Mahdi's family. Under Yemen Sharia law, 'blood money' is an acceptable form of compensation.
Nimisha's family has expressed willingness to pay ₹8.6 crore as part of this compensation. "In Islam, instead of killing, there is also a practice of giving Diya (compensation). I requested them to accept Diyaat as the party is ready here for it," stated the Grand Mufti.
The family's relief over the delay is palpable, yet they remain hopeful that they can prevent her execution altogether and bring Nimisha back safely to India.
