India Calls for Urgent Global Action Against Large-Scale Violence at UN General Assembly
India has expressed concern over ongoing global conflicts, emphasising the need for urgent solutions. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that the world cannot accept large-scale violence as inevitable. He highlighted the international community's desire for immediate resolutions during the General Debate of the 79th UN General Assembly.

Jaishankar noted that the world is still recovering from the Covid pandemic while facing prolonged conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. He stressed that peace and development are interconnected, yet challenges to one often neglect the other. The economic impact on vulnerable populations needs attention, he added.
Global South Development Challenges
India pointed out that development plans in the Global South have been derailed, with Sustainable Development Goals becoming increasingly distant. Jaishankar criticised unfair trade practices and unviable projects that increase debt levels. He also mentioned strategic implications when connectivity disregards sovereignty, indirectly referencing China.
The minister observed that global conversations have become challenging and agreements harder to reach. This situation contrasts with what the United Nations' founders envisioned. Trust has diminished, and international processes have faltered, he remarked.
Globalisation and Economic Fairness
Jaishankar highlighted the unfairness of the current globalisation model as a reason many countries are left behind. Over-concentration of production has weakened economies, affecting employment and social stability. He advocated for democratising global production, building resilient supply chains, and promoting open-source culture to enhance prosperity.
The UN symbolises agreed principles and shared objectives of world order, according to Jaishankar. Respect for international law is crucial for global security and stability. Those aspiring to lead must set a positive example and avoid violating fundamental principles, he asserted.
Jaishankar reiterated that conflicts like those in Ukraine and Gaza require urgent solutions. The sentiments of the international community must be acknowledged and acted upon. He warned against being indifferent to violence's broader consequences.
The minister concluded by stating that countries have taken more from the international system than they have contributed, weakening it in the process. He called for recognising conflicts' need for resolution and addressing their economic implications on weaker nations.
