Will Step Down Once The War Ends With Russia: Ukraine's Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasises his commitment to ending the war with Russia, stating he prioritises peace over political ambitions. His appeal to global leaders highlights the urgency of addressing Russian aggression and supporting Ukraine's defence efforts.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, has expressed his willingness to step down after the conflict with Russia concludes. His main focus is on ending the war rather than pursuing another term in office.

"My goal is to finish the war, not to continue running for office," he told Axios.

Zelenskyy's remarks are among his most definitive yet, indicating he doesn't plan to hold onto power indefinitely. Since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, he has become a prominent figure globally. However, Moscow often dismisses him as an "illegitimate" leader. Earlier this year, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had made it clear that the Kremlin wouldn't accept Zelenskyy's signature on any peace agreement.

Ukraine's Struggle and Global Appeal

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Zelenskyy dismissed any possibility of a ceasefire, accusing Moscow of having no interest in peace. He claimed Russia was abducting Ukrainian children and targeting civilian infrastructure. "Ukrainians are peaceful people, even during bloodshed," he said, questioning how long it would take to reunite families.

Zelenskyy also warned that Moldova could fall under Russian influence if Europe didn't act decisively. He urged world leaders to increase support for Kyiv. Highlighting Ukraine's limited military resources compared to Russia's might, he noted their reliance on drones for defense. "Ukraine doesn't have the big fat missiles dictators love to show off in parades," he remarked.

International Call for Action

The Ukrainian President appealed to global leaders by stating that halting Putin now is more cost-effective than protecting global ports or ships later. He emphasised that war has already affected too many lives and urged nations not to remain silent while Russia prolongs the conflict. "Please speak out and condemn it," he implored.

Sergey Lavrov had previously commented on Zelenskyy's legitimacy during an interview with NBC News. Lavrov mentioned that when it comes time to sign documents, there must be a clear understanding of legitimacy. He added that currently, the Kremlin views Zelenskyy only as the "de facto head of the regime" rather than Ukraine's legitimate leader.
