Will AI Replace Software Engineers? Bill Gates Says ‘Not in the Next 20 Years’
Bill Gates has weighed in on artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on software engineering. In a discussion with Zerodha's Nikhil Kamath, the Microsoft co-founder made it clear that AI's rise will not eliminate the demand for software engineers.
Gates emphasized that AI is already enhancing sectors such as education and health. "This technology helps create educational tutors and has shown great results in India and the US," he said. The potential for increased productivity is significant.

Job Security for Software Engineers
Addressing concerns about job displacement, Gates explained that such worries are overblown. "We still need those software engineers as we are not going to stop needing them," he stated. AI, according to Gates, will not reduce the necessity for skilled engineers.
Long-term Impact and Societal Changes
Gates touched on the possibility of AI replacing all jobs, which he finds unlikely in the near future. He suggested that if AI did reach such a level, it could benefit the elderly and disabled. However, it might also challenge societal values and organisational structures.
Gates reassured that a complete job replacement by AI is not imminent, at least for the next 20 years. He humorously added, "Although I am not sure of that."
