Why Has UK Refused Asylum To Sheikh Hasina Despite Being Haven For Runaway VVIPs?

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina may extend her stay in India as her plans to seek asylum in the United Kingdom have hit a "technical roadblock," according to reports.

Hasina arrived in India on August 5, after violent protests against her government forced her to flee Bangladesh. Initially, she intended to travel to London from India, but complications have arisen.

The British government has indicated that Hasina might not receive the expected legal protection in the UK, leading her to reconsider her options, reported the Times of India.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy highlighted the need for a "full and independent UN-led investigation into the events" in Bangladesh, which complicates her asylum prospects.

A UK Home Office source stated, "It is not possible to apply for asylum from outside UK. The UK has a proud record of providing protection for people who need it. However, there is no provision within our immigration rules for someone to be allowed to travel to UK to seek asylum or temporary refuge. Those who need international protection should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach, that is the fastest route to safety."

Other alternative destinations for Hasina

Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed, mentioned that while London remains her preferred destination, they are also considering alternatives like the US and Finland.

Hasina's sister, Sheikh Rehana, who accompanied her to India, already has political asylum in the UK and holds British citizenship.

Hasina's political connections in the UK, including her niece Tulip Siddiq, a Labour MP and Economic Secretary to the Treasury, might have initially seemed advantageous. However, the current situation requires Hasina to explore other options, including possibly seeking asylum in India.

Where does India stand on Hasina's stay?

India has not yet disclosed how long it will allow former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to remain in the country.

External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, informed an all-party meeting that Hasina is currently in a state of shock, and the Indian government is providing her with time to recover before addressing various issues, including her future plans.

Jaishankar also revealed that Hasina had sought "urgent approval" for a short-term stay in India. The Indian government is being cautious, aware that her opponents in Bangladesh could use an extended stay to question India's intentions.

Despite Hasina's departure, India is committed to ensuring that its missions in Bangladesh continue to function normally once law and order are restored.

In Parliament, Jaishankar iterated that India is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Bangladesh.
