WHO Calls Emergency Meeting To Address Monkeypox Surge From Congo

An emergency meeting has been convened by the World Health Organization (WHO) to discuss the recent outbreak of monkeypox (Mpox) amid a significant surge in cases originating from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This meeting aims to determine whether the current spread of the virus warrants global concern.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on X that an independent committee of experts will be assembled promptly to assess the situation. "In light of the spread of #mpox outside #DRC and the potential for further international spread within and beyond Africa, I have decided to convene an Emergency Committee under the International Health Regulations to advise me on whether the outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern," stated the WHO chief.

Overview of the Monkeypox Outbreak

Since September of last year, a surge in monkeypox cases has been reported in the Central African nation of Congo. A strain of the virus has been detected in neighboring countries as well. According to Al Jazeera, the DRC has recorded over 27,000 cases and more than 1,100 deaths, with a significant number of fatalities occurring among children.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that mpox cases have been detected in 10 African nations this year, with over 96 percent of the cases being concentrated in Congo.

Historical Context and Current Statistics

In 2022, the WHO declared mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, a global emergency after it spread to over 70 countries. This year, cases of the virus have surged by 160 percent, and deaths have increased by 19 percent. The majority of the cases and deaths are occurring in children under 15 years of age, with 70 percent of the total cases and 85 percent of the total deaths reported in this age group.

Symptoms and Health Implications

Mpox typically presents with symptoms such as fever, chills, respiratory issues (including nasal congestion and cough), swollen lymph nodes, and muscle pain.

The WHO's decision to call an emergency meeting underscores the growing concern over the virus's impact and the need for a coordinated international response to manage and mitigate the outbreak.
