What Is A 'DDOS Attack'? Elon Musk Flags Cyber Disruption During Trump Interview On X
Tech billionaire Elon Musk recently identified a "massive DDOS attack" on X (formerly Twitter) that disrupted his highly anticipated interview with former President Donald Trump.
The interview, which was set to mark Trump's return to the platform ahead of the upcoming U.S. Presidential elections in November, faced significant delays due to this cyber incident.

As the interview struggled to go live, Musk addressed the issue on X, explaining that in the worst-case scenario, the platform would only be able to accommodate a smaller number of live listeners. The full conversation would be posted online afterwards.
Musk shared in a post, "There appears to be a massive DDOS attack on X. Working on shutting it down. Worst case, we will proceed with a smaller number of live listeners and post the conversation later," acknowledging the unforeseen technical challenges.
What is a DDOS Attack?
A Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDOS) attack is a cybercrime that disrupts the normal traffic of a targeted server, service, or network by overwhelming it with a flood of internet traffic. This type of attack is designed to make the target inaccessible to users, effectively shutting it down.
According to cybersecurity firm Fortinet, a DDOS attack involves the use of multiple compromised computer systems to generate the attack traffic. These systems can include computers and other networked resources that have been hijacked by the attackers. The goal is to prevent legitimate users from accessing online services or websites.
Cloudflare, an IT service management firm, explains that the distributed nature of a DDOS attack makes it particularly difficult to defend against, as the traffic originates from numerous sources, making it hard to distinguish between legitimate and malicious traffic.
Musk's interview with Trump eventually proceeded with limited live listeners, but the disruption highlighted the vulnerabilities that even major platforms like X can face in the digital age. As the world becomes increasingly reliant on online platforms for communication, the threat of DDOS attacks and other forms of cybercrime remains a significant concern.
