What Drove Lucy Letby To Allegedly Murder Babies: Investigators List Possible Motives
Nurse Lucy Letby's recent conviction for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six others has brought attention to her disturbing actions, placing her among the most notorious medical serial killers in the UK. The victims of her crimes were tragically young, with the youngest being just one day old.
While the motivations behind the 33-year-old nurse's actions remain perplexing, the prosecution introduced several potential motives during her lengthy 10-month trial. These motives shed light on the complex factors that might have driven her to commit these heinous acts.

Desire for Control and Power: The trial revealed that Nurse Letby's final victims were two of three triplets boys, identified as babies O and P. Testimonies indicated that by this point, she had lost control and was seemingly enjoying the power she wielded over the babies' lives. Prosecutors argued that she was essentially "playing God" by harming infants and then being the first to alert her colleagues about their deteriorating health. This suggested a disturbing sense of control and enjoyment from manipulating their fates.
Sadistic Pleasure: Investigative efforts revealed Letby's troubling pattern of behavior. During searches of her residence, authorities discovered incriminating hospital documents and a handwritten note in which she described herself as "evil" and responsible for the actions. Prosecutors inferred that she may have been deriving a perverse thrill from the suffering and sorrow experienced by the babies' families.
Desire for Attention: The prosecution asserted that Letby may have been involved in a covert relationship with a married doctor at the hospital. This doctor was frequently called upon when babies' conditions rapidly worsened, creating a significant link between them. While it was suggested that Letby inflicted harm on the infants to gain his personal attention, she denied this motive. The evidence presented included text messages and meetings outside of work, indicating a potentially unprofessional relationship.
Inadequacy and Self-Doubt: Letby left behind notes containing deeply troubling sentiments. In one of these notes, she confessed to deliberately causing harm to the babies due to feelings of inadequacy in caring for them. These notes offered insights into her internal struggles and hinted at a disturbing self-perception that contributed to her actions.
Boredom and Stimulation: Letby's profession as a nurse qualified her to care for critically ill babies in the neonatal unit. However, her trial revealed that she found her work less engaging when attending to babies who required less intensive medical attention. This potentially led her to seek stimulation through harmful acts, which tragically manifested as the deliberate administration of substances like air, insulin, or overdose.
