WestJet Preemptively Cancels Flights as Mechanics Threaten Strike Action

In a preemptive move to manage potential disruptions, Canadian airline WestJet has started to cancel flights ahead of a possible strike by aircraft maintenance technicians. The decision aims to mitigate the impact on passengers and prevent the scenario of having travelers and aircraft grounded. WestJet anticipates approximately 40 flight cancellations between Tuesday and Wednesday, impacting around 6,500 passengers. As of Wednesday afternoon Eastern time, FlightAware's tracking service reported that the airline had already cancelled 20 flights, equating to 4% of its schedule, following the cancellation of five flights on Tuesday.

WestJet Cancels Flights Over Strike Fear

The low-fare carrier is actively seeking alternative solutions for customers affected by the cancellations. This situation arises amidst ongoing negotiations between WestJet and the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association over an initial collective-bargaining agreement that would cover roughly 680 mechanics. In an effort to resolve the deadlock, WestJet recently appealed to the Canadian Industrial Relations Board, requesting that both parties be directed into binding arbitration. The union has countered by threatening to initiate a strike as early as Thursday night unless WestJet agrees to resume talks this week in Calgary.

Diederik Pen, President of WestJet, highlighted that the airline's latest contract proposal would position WestJet maintenance engineers as the highest paid in Canada, with a projected increase in take-home pay of 30 to 40 percent within a year. However, the union contends that the airline is attempting to enforce a contract overwhelmingly rejected by its members, with a 97.5 percent vote against it. According to the union, inadequate compensation is a key factor hindering WestJet's ability to attract candidates for vacant positions.

Established in the 1990s and inspired by Southwest Airlines in the US, WestJet has grown to become Canada's second-largest airline. The ongoing dispute and subsequent flight cancellations underscore the challenges faced by both parties in reaching an agreement that satisfies the demands of the workforce while ensuring operational continuity and passenger satisfaction.
