French Cup Final Overshadowed by Violent Clashes Between Lyon and PSG Supporters

Violence erupted between Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) supporters on a highway leading to the venue of the French Cup final, hours before the game was set to commence on Saturday. The confrontation saw supporters engaging in violent acts, including throwing flares and smashing bus windows. Some buses transporting fans were even set ablaze. This incident underscores the intense rivalry between Lyon and PSG ultras, which has been a source of concern for authorities.

Violence Mars French Cup Final

The national police division for the fight against hooliganism had already categorized the final as a very high security risk event, assigning it the highest threat level of five, as reported by RMC Sport. The longstanding feud between the two groups of supporters was anticipated to lead to tensions during their travel to Villeneuve d'Ascq for the final match.

Additionally, PSG supporters were involved in disturbances during the youth French Cup final, targeting Marseille Under-19 goalkeeper Aboubaka Dosso with projectiles. This led to a temporary suspension of the game for about ten minutes in the second half. Despite these disruptions, Marseille emerged victorious against Nancy with a 4-1 scoreline.

The French Cup final, which saw PSG defeating Lyon 2-1, was moved to Stade Pierre Mauroy in northern France due to Olympic Games preparations in Paris. However, this season has been marred by violence across French football. Notably, a Nantes supporter lost his life after being stabbed by a driver carrying Nice fans before a league match in December. Furthermore, a game between Montpellier and Clermont was abandoned after a firecracker exploded near Clermont goalkeeper Mory Diaw, and a match involving Marseille and Lyon was postponed following an attack on Lyon's team bus that resulted in then-coach Fabio Grosso sustaining a serious head injury.

Inside the stadium during that postponed match, Lyon fans were reported making offensive Nazi salutes and monkey gestures. Last month, a violent altercation involving dozens of ultras occurred before a game between Rennes and Toulouse, resulting in one Toulouse fan requiring hospital treatment for head trauma.

The issue of violence extends beyond these incidents, with ultras targeting buses carrying supporters leading to over a dozen attacks this season alone. These events highlight the ongoing challenges faced by French football authorities in curbing hooliganism and ensuring the safety of fans attending matches.
