Esteemed Journalist and Publisher John Brewer Dies at Age 76

The journalism community mourns the loss of John Brewer, a distinguished journalist whose career spanned five decades, including significant contributions to The Associated Press. Brewer, 76, tragically passed away during a fly fishing trip in Montana when the boat he was in capsized after hitting a submerged log. The incident, which occurred on Friday, also involved his longtime friend Randy Johnson and two others who were rescued. Johnson expressed his shock and difficulty in coming to terms with Brewer's sudden demise.

Veteran Journalist John Brewer Dies at 76

John Brewer's journalism journey began in his hometown of Upland, California, at the Upland News. His career took him across the country, from 1969 to 1988, serving as a reporter, bureau chief, and executive for The Associated Press in Seattle, Los Angeles, and New York. Notably, as the Seattle bureau chief, he led coverage of the catastrophic 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. Later, in Los Angeles, he managed the coverage of the 1984 Summer Olympics. Brewer's influence extended beyond news reporting; he encountered Mark Hamill before his "Star Wars" fame when Hamill worked under him as a copy boy.

Following his tenure at The Associated Press, Brewer dedicated ten years as president, chief executive officer, and editor-in-chief of The New York Times Syndication Sales Corp., where he was instrumental in licensing and enlisting high-profile columnists such as Mikhail Gorbachev and Jimmy Carter.

In 2015, Brewer retired as editor and publisher of the Peninsula Daily News in Port Angeles after nearly 18 years. Eran Kennedy, the current publisher, praised Brewer as a true journalist driven by unwavering integrity and a passion for community journalism. "We are profoundly saddened by the unexpected loss of John Brewer," Kennedy stated, committing to honor Brewer's legacy.

Community Impact and Personal Life

Beyond his professional achievements, Brewer was deeply involved in his community in Port Angeles. He actively participated in civic organizations and contributed to local projects like constructing a new playground. His friend Johnson highlighted Brewer's continuous efforts to make a difference in the community even after retirement.

Born on October 24, 1947, Brewer's early start in journalism set the stage for a storied career that impacted many facets of news reporting and community involvement. He is survived by Barbara Wise and two sons. Details regarding funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.

The journalism world has indeed lost a figure of immense integrity and passion. John Brewer's dedication to his craft and his community will be remembered by colleagues, friends, and those who were touched by his work.
