The United States Congress recently paid tribute to the life and contributions of Indian-American columnist and academic Ved Nanda, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 89. Nanda, a prominent figure in the field of international law and a bridge between India and the US, was honoured for his dedication to education, cultural understanding, and peace-building efforts.

A Life Dedicated to Education and Justice
Born in 1934 in Gujranwala, India, Ved Nanda built an impressive academic career. He obtained an M.A. in Economics from Punjab University, followed by law degrees from Delhi University and Northwestern University. He also completed postgraduate work at Yale University.
Nanda's passion for justice and peace was evident throughout his career. He taught at the University of Denver for five decades, where he inspired and mentored generations of students. His seminal work for The Denver Post, particularly his 2017 reflection on India's partition, highlighted his commitment to understanding and addressing historical conflicts.
Recognition and Accolades
Nanda's contributions were widely recognised and celebrated. In 2004, he received the prestigious Gandhi-King-Ikeda Award for Community Peace Building. In 2018, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian awards.
In 2006, the University of Denver established the Ved Nanda Center for International and Comparative Law with a USD 1 million founding gift from Nanda himself. The centre promotes programmes and scholarships in the field of international law, continuing Nanda's legacy of fostering knowledge and understanding.
A Voice for Peace in a Troubled World
Nanda's commitment to peace and cultural exchange extended beyond academia. For over three decades, he shared his insights and perspectives on international issues through his regular columns in the Denver Post. His clear and reasoned explanations provided valuable insights to readers, helping them understand complex global challenges.
In an op-ed published after Nanda's passing, the Denver Post highlighted the importance of his voice in a world grappling with conflicts and violence. The daily emphasised the need for more individuals like Nanda, who followed a clear moral compass towards peace.
A Legacy of Inspiration
Ved Nanda's passing is a profound loss for the academic community, the Indian diaspora, and countless individuals across the US and the world. His intellectual contributions, passion for education, and love for both India and the United States continue to inspire and motivate others. Nanda's legacy as a bridge between nations and a tireless advocate for peace will endure for generations to come.
