US Senator Richard Blumenthal Advocates for Action Against Mysterious Drones in New Jersey Region

Mysterious drones have been spotted over sensitive areas in New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic region, prompting calls for action. Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut has urged authorities to consider shooting them down if necessary. The ownership of these drones remains unknown, raising concerns about their presence near airports and military bases.

Senator Blumenthal Calls for Drone Action

Blumenthal expressed frustration with the Biden administration's response, stating, "The Biden administration ought to be acting more aggressively against these drones that have been reported. If only to tell the American people who owns them, who's flying them, what they are. The lack of information is absolutely unacceptable." He highlighted the potential risk of drones sharing airspace with commercial airlines.

Drone Sightings and Public Safety Concerns

The Department of Homeland Security briefed a state lawmaker on Wednesday, revealing that these drones evade detection by traditional methods like helicopters and radio. Despite this, Governor Phil Murphy and law enforcement officials have assured the public that there is no immediate threat to safety. The FBI is investigating and has requested residents to provide any videos or photos they might have.

Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia described the drones as being up to 6 feet in diameter and sometimes flying with their lights off. These sightings have increased recently, although officials note that some reports may mistake planes for drones or involve repeated sightings of a single drone.

Regulations and Legal Use of Drones

Drones are legally permitted for recreational and commercial use in New Jersey but must adhere to local and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. Operators are required to be FAA certified. Most of the drones seen in New Jersey are larger than those typically used by hobbyists.

The initial concern arose when drones were spotted near Picatinny Arsenal, a US military research facility, and over Donald Trump's golf course in Bedminster. This has led to increased scrutiny from lawmakers and officials across the region.

Calls for Military Intervention

Two Republican congressmen from the Jersey Shore area, Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, have also advocated for military intervention to address the drone issue. Smith recounted an incident where a dozen drones closely followed a Coast Guard lifeboat near Barnegat Light and Island Beach State Park.

Coast Guard Lt Luke Pinneo confirmed that multiple low-altitude aircraft were observed near one of their vessels at Island Beach State Park. This incident has added urgency to calls for action against these unidentified drones.

Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of transparency surrounding the drone sightings. He emphasized the need for clarity to prevent fear or misinformation from spreading among the public.

The situation continues to develop as authorities work to identify the source of these drones and ensure public safety while maintaining transparency with residents in affected areas.
