US Requests Finland For Eggs, Gets Rejected—Internet Can’t Stop Laughing, Calls It ‘Karma'

The United States is facing a severe egg shortage as prices continue to soar due to a bird flu outbreak that has devastated poultry farms. In an effort to stabilise supply, US officials have reached out to European nations, including Finland and Denmark, seeking egg imports. However, Finland has declined, citing a lack of market access agreements.

According to a Reuters report, egg prices in the US surged by 59 per cent year-on-year in February, marking the first full month of President Donald Trump's new term. By early March, the wholesale price of a dozen eggs had exceeded $8 (approximately Rs 700), reaching an all-time high, as reported by Newsweek. Although prices have since fallen slightly to around $6 (approximately Rs 520), they remain significantly elevated, as per Trading Economics.

Finland's poultry industry confirmed that it had been approached for exports, but Veera Lehtila, director of the Finnish Poultry Association, explained why this was not possible.

"There have been no negotiations regarding market access with US authorities," she told Yle News. Finland does not have the necessary approval to export eggs to the US, and establishing such trade would require extensive bureaucracy, research, and paperwork.

Even if Finland were to secure export permissions, it would not be enough to resolve America's egg crisis. "Millions of birds have had to be culled in the US due to bird flu. In Finland, we have only four million laying hens in total. The amount we could export would not make a significant difference," Lehtila added.
