US President Biden Joins UAW Picket Line In Michigan

US President Joe Biden extended his support for striking United Auto Workers (UAW) union members in Michigan on Tuesday by joining them on a picket line, a rare presidential act of solidarity. This visit is a key element of his strategy to win the favor of union members in Michigan, a pivotal state for the upcoming presidential election, and to counter his likely Republican opponent, Donald Trump, who is also scheduled to visit Detroit on Wednesday to engage with workers.

Biden To join UAW Picket Line In Michigan, Slams Donald Trump’s Anti-Union Stance

Although Trump garnered the support of many union members in his 2016 victory over Hillary Clinton in Michigan, ultimately losing the state to Biden in 2020, he is not expected to participate in the picket line.

Biden's trip aims to underscore his claim of being the most pro-union president in U.S. history and potentially to secure the endorsement of the UAW, which has not yet backed his re-election campaign.

In a post on 'X,' the social media platform replacing Twitter, the president announced his intention to "join the picket line and stand in solidarity with the men and women of UAW as they fight for a fair share of the value they helped create." He further emphasized the need for a mutually beneficial agreement that sustains American auto manufacturing with well-compensated UAW positions.

The President expressed his support for the ongoing 12-day strike by Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis workers and had previously stated that he would send his labor secretary, Julie Su, and Gene Sperling, a senior White House adviser, to assist the union in reaching an agreement with the companies.

However, this plan was abandoned after criticism from the UAW's president, Shawn Fain, who has also rejected Trump's attempts to court union members. Trump, in his bid to regain union support for the upcoming election, has accused the union leadership of betraying workers and criticized Biden's environmental policy of encouraging American automakers to transition to electric vehicles.
