US Military Launches Air Assault On Iranian-Backed Militias In Iraq, Syria

In response to the drone strike that killed three US troops in Jordan, the US military launched a massive air assault on dozens of sites in Iraq and Syria used by Iranian forces and Tehran-backed militia groups. President Joe Biden authorized the strikes, which targeted command and control headquarters, intelligence centers, rockets and missiles, drone and ammunition storage sites, and other facilities connected to the militias or the IRGC's Quds Force.

Precision Strikes with Manned and Unmanned Aircraft

The barrage of strikes involved more than 85 targets at seven locations and utilized over 125 precision munitions delivered by various aircraft, including long-range bombers flown from the United States. The strikes aimed to disrupt the militias' capabilities and deter future attacks on US forces.

Retaliation for Drone Strike in Jordan

The US military action came after days of warnings from President Biden and top US leaders that America would retaliate for the drone strike in Jordan. The strikes were part of a "tiered response" that would continue at times and places chosen by the US.

Iran's Response and Escalation Concerns

Iran has denied involvement in the Jordan attack, but its hard-line President Ebrahim Raisi reiterated Tehran's potential for retaliation against any US strikes targeting its interests. While the US strikes avoided directly targeting Iran or senior leaders of the Revolutionary Guard Quds Force within Iran's borders, concerns remain about the potential for further escalation of the conflict.

Mixed Reactions from Iranian-Backed Militias

Kataeb Hezbollah, one of the main Iran-backed militias, announced the suspension of attacks on American troops to prevent embarrassment to the Iraqi government. However, Harakat al-Nujaba, another major Iran-backed group, vowed to continue military operations against US troops.

History of Militia Attacks and Regional Tensions

The Iran-backed militias have been a threat to US bases for years, intensifying their assaults following Israel's war with Hamas. The conflict has led to the deaths of thousands of Palestinians and inflamed tensions in the Middle East, with Iran-backed militia groups using the conflict to justify strikes on Israeli or US interests.

US Defense Measures and Additional Strikes

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized the dangerous situation in the Middle East and affirmed the US commitment to defending its interests and people. The US has bolstered defenses at the base in Jordan that was attacked and taken additional self-defense strikes inside Yemen against Houthi military targets.

Sanctions on Iran and Cyber Activities

In addition to the air strikes, the US Treasury imposed new sanctions on a network of firms in Iran and Hong Kong accused of assisting Iran in procuring technology for ballistic weapons and drones. Six Iranian officials were also sanctioned for allegedly committing malicious cyber activities against critical infrastructure in the US and other nations.

The US air assault on Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria marks a significant escalation in tensions between the US and Iran. While the strikes were aimed at deterring future attacks, the potential for further escalation remains a major concern. The complex regional dynamics and the involvement of various armed groups add to the challenges of managing the conflict and ensuring stability in the Middle East.
