US Military Launches Airstrikes Targeting Islamic State Operatives in Somalia

The US military has launched airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Somalia, marking the first such action in the country during President Donald Trump's second term. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that these strikes were directed by Trump and coordinated with the Somali government. An initial Pentagon assessment reported that several operatives were killed, with no civilian casualties.

US Airstrikes Target Islamic State in Somalia

Trump shared on social media that a senior IS planner and recruits were targeted in the operation. "The strikes destroyed the caves they live in, and killed many terrorists without, in any way, harming civilians. Our Military has targeted this ISIS Attack Planner for years, but Biden and his cronies wouldn't act quickly enough to get the job done. I did!" Trump said. "The message to ISIS and all others who would attack Americans is that 'WE WILL FIND YOU, AND WE WILL KILL YOU!'"

US Military Strategy in Africa

The Pentagon's counterterrorism efforts in Africa have faced challenges as Chad and Niger expelled US forces last year, taking over key bases used for training and missions against terrorist groups in the Sahel region. This vast area south of the Sahara Desert has seen increased IS activity.

US military officials have expressed concerns about IS cells receiving guidance from leaders who have moved to northern Somalia. This includes instructions on kidnapping Westerners for ransom, improving military tactics, evading drones, and constructing small quadcopters.

Previous Airstrikes and IS Presence

A US airstrike in Somalia last May targeted IS militants, resulting in three deaths according to US Africa Command. The International Crisis Group estimates that hundreds of IS militants are scattered across Somalia, primarily in the Cal Miskaat mountains of Puntland's Bari region.

Saturday's operation followed airstrikes on January 30 in northwest Syria, which killed a senior operative from Hurras al-Din, an al-Qaeda affiliate, as reported by US Central Command.

White House officials have not yet commented on the recent strikes or identified whether the targeted IS planner was killed. The situation highlights ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in Africa amid shifting alliances and strategies.
