US Set to Take Decisive Action Against Iran-Backed Militias
Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin declares the necessity to further weaken Iran-backed militias following attacks on US forces and ships in the Middle East. Despite previous US strikes, militant groups continue their hostilities, prompting the US to prepare substantial action in response to the deaths of three service members in Jordan.
In response to the deaths of three US service members in Jordan, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced plans to take significant action against Iran-backed militias that have repeatedly struck at US forces and ships in the Middle East. Austin emphasized the need to further diminish the capabilities of these militias, as previous strikes have failed to deter their attacks.

Persistent Attacks Despite US Counterstrikes
Since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas in October, Iranian-backed militant groups have launched numerous attacks on US bases in Iraq and Syria, employing rockets, missiles, and one-way attack drones. These attacks have prompted several US counterstrikes on militant facilities in both countries. Additionally, the US military has conducted airstrikes targeting the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
Houthi Rebels Continue Attacks in the Red Sea
In the Red Sea, the Houthi rebels have escalated their attacks on commercial and military ships, with nearly 40 incidents recorded since November. The latest attack involved a ballistic missile fired at a Liberian-flagged container ship west of Hodeida, Yemen. The crew and vessel remained safe, and the blast occurred at a distance from the ship.
Uncertain Attribution and Ongoing Threats
While the Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack on the container ship, known as the Koi, American officials had no immediate information on any attack on Wednesday night. The private security firm Ambrey reported a separate missile attack southwest of Aden, Yemen, near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which the Houthis also claimed responsibility for. However, US officials had no immediate information on this incident either.
The Houthis justify their attacks on ships as a response to Israel's offensive in Gaza against Hamas. However, they have frequently targeted vessels with tenuous or no clear links to Israel, jeopardizing shipping in a crucial route for global trade between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
US Military Strikes Against Houthi Drones and Missiles
In response to the ongoing attacks, the US military conducted airstrikes on Wednesday, destroying 10 Houthi drones prepared for launch and a ground control station used by the rebels. Additionally, the US intercepted a ballistic missile and other drones already in the air during the day.
The United States remains committed to protecting its forces and interests in the Middle East. The recent attacks by Iran-backed militias have prompted the US to take decisive action to further disable these groups and deter future attacks. The situation remains fluid, and the US military is closely monitoring developments in the region.
