US, India Will Eventually Unite On Issues: Trump Aide As Tariffs Kick In

The relationship between India and the US remains complex amid recent trade tariffs and geopolitical tensions. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasises the need for dialogue while criticising India's energy purchases from Russia. Both nations continue to engage despite challenges affecting their partnership.

A senior official from the Trump administration remarked that the relationship between India and the US is "very complicated." However, he expressed confidence that both nations will "eventually come together." These comments were made by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent shortly after Washington imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods. This move was intended to penalise New Delhi for its purchase of Russian oil.

Bessent highlighted the complex nature of the India-US relationship, acknowledging tensions over trade and Russia. He stated, "I do think India is the world's largest democracy and the US is the world's largest economy. At the end of the day, we will come together." He also accused India of "profiteering" from Russian energy sales and dragging out trade negotiations.

Trade Negotiations and Tariffs

The US has imposed a 25% punitive tariff on Indian goods, adding to an existing 25% reciprocal tariff. This brings total duties to as much as 50% on items like garments, gems, jewellery, footwear, and chemicals. These tariffs affect nearly 55% of India's $87 billion in merchandise exports to the US. Indian officials have termed these tariffs "unjustified," yet they maintain there is still room for negotiation.

Bessent expressed frustration with the slow pace of trade talks, noting he expected a deal with India early on. He mentioned that India began negotiating tariffs soon after Liberation Day but no agreement has been reached. He criticised India's approach as "performative" and pointed out their profiteering from Russian crude purchases.

India's Response and Global Trade Dynamics

India has questioned why it faces penalties for buying Russian oil while larger buyers like China have not faced similar actions. New Delhi called this disparity "unjustified and unacceptable." PM Modi has vowed not to compromise on the interests of Indian farmers amid US pressure. Reports suggest Modi ignored four calls from President Trump recently due to his anger over the tariff issue.

Bessent suggested that in trade disputes, deficit countries like the US hold advantages over surplus countries like India. He argued that India's high tariffs contribute to a large trade deficit with America. When asked about concerns over India trading in rupees with BRICS nations instead of dollars, Bessent dismissed it as a threat.

Global Reactions and Future Prospects

Bessent also criticised European leaders for purchasing refined products made from Russian oil. Meanwhile, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar commented on oil purchases: "If you have a problem buying oil or refined products from India, don't buy it." This statement reflects India's stance amid ongoing tensions.
