Free COVID-19 Home Test Kits to Be Mailed by US Government
Following a summer surge in COVID-19 cases, Americans can soon receive free virus test kits delivered to their homes. Starting in late September, US households will be able to order up to four COVID-19 nasal swab tests through the federal programme, as stated on the website COVIDtests.gov. The exact date for ordering has not yet been announced by the US Health and Human Services (HHS) agency.

Free Test Kits for Households
The tests will identify current virus strains and can be ordered before the holiday season when gatherings are common, according to an HHS spokesperson's emailed statement. Over-the-counter at-home COVID-19 tests typically cost around USD 11 as of last year. The government is also encouraging people to get an updated COVID-19 booster shot ahead of the fall and winter respiratory virus season.
This week, US regulators approved a new COVID-19 vaccine designed to target recent virus strains and potentially upcoming winter variants. Despite this, vaccine uptake remains low. Although most Americans have some immunity from previous infections or vaccinations, data shows that less than a quarter of US adults received last fall's COVID-19 shot.
Government Efforts and Public Response
The Biden administration has distributed 1.8 billion COVID-19 tests, with half sent to households by mail. It is unclear how many tests are currently available. Tens of billions of taxpayer dollars have been spent on developing COVID-19 tests, vaccines, and treatments. Although deaths and severe infections have significantly decreased since the virus began spreading in the US in 2020, hospitalizations have slightly increased in recent weeks.
In total, more than 1 million Americans have died from COVID-19. The announcement of free test kits comes as part of ongoing efforts to manage the virus's impact and encourage preventive measures among the public.
The availability of free test kits aims to help families prepare for the holiday season safely. The initiative reflects continued efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and protect public health.
